Based on a study by Cornell, there is a new ratio to keep in mind when it comes to office furniture. Before you get your presents lined up this year and spend money on a regular desk, ask yourself, is the person you are shopping for one of the four out of five?
Apparently, four our of five people prefer to work at an electric, adjustable height desk. There are a lot of reasons why people are drawn to a standing desk just from preference alone. The ability to choose between sitting and standing throughout the day resulted in the participants standing 20% of the day.
By making this small change, the workers reported
- “significantly less musculoskeletal upper-body discomfort”
- lower discomfort in the afternoon
- “significantly more productivity”
The study was performed by the director of Cornell’s Human Factors and Ergonomics Laboratory Alan Hedge, and it consisted of 33 office workers. AFter a month of using an adjustable height desk, here were the numbers:
- Over 80% preferred using the electric, height adjustable desk
- Musculoskeletal discomfort was 20% lower for people who used the adjustable height desks
As a result of the study, and the fact that the adjustable height desk was so popular with workers who suffered from neck and shoulder problems, Hedge recommended an adjustable height desk for anyone who has a back injury and needs to take a standing break for comfort. He also said that an adjustable height desk could be helpful for anyone who just wants to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day.
